It’s no surprise that the founder of the smoking-slipper brand Stubbs & Wootton lived in a chic and stylish Connecticut home.
Percy Steinhart—the late designer of velvet slippers worn by the likes of Anne Hathaway, Lady Gaga, and the former king of Spain—was the owner of this Federal-style beauty in Litchfield, originally built in 1874. After buying the estate, he went ahead and undertook a full renovation of the property, adding his signature design touches to the abode. Steinhart died back in October, at the age of 76, and his home is now on the market for $3.9 million with Heather Croner and Patricia McNamee at William Pitt | Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty.
A 6,641-square-foot main house anchors the four-acre spread, which backs up to protected land-trust property. Off the entry hall, you’ll find a stately library with forest-green walls, a lovely bay window, and a fireplace in front of which you can curl up with a good book. An optical-illusion wood floor blankets the cream-colored living room, with French doors in the back spilling open to a light-filled garden room. The modern kitchen, with gleaming marble countertops, leads to a punchy red-orange dining room heated up by a corner fireplace.
Front and back stairways whisk you away to the second floor, where you’ll find the primary suite. Dainty wallpaper wraps around the bedroom, which sports yet another fireplace and a bay window overlooking the grounds. An adjacent bedroom is carpeted in leopard print, if you’re looking for something a bit louder. Two more ensuite bedrooms are situated on this floor, with an additional two up on the third floor. The main house is rounded out by a large, unrenovated room that could be turned into an office, a fitness center, or even more guest accommodations.
Out back, the tranquil stone-paved pool is paired with a spacious, one-bedroom pool house. The cozy living room here is accompanied by a full kitchen and a billiards room. Outside, the pool house is equipped with an outdoor fireplace for cooking, ideal for whipping up meals during pool parties and the like. Among the grounds, there’s also a carriage house, a greenhouse, and a professional-grade croquet lawn. A little friendly competition never hurt anybody.
